Why turning your server off could be a disaster

20/7/2011

It can be such a temptation, at the first sign of trouble or instability, to turn reboot your sever. Hey, it certainly works for desktop PCs, and let's face it, we've all heard the technician on the other end of the line who used the tried and true statement "Have you tried restarting it?".

As good as that advice is for desktops, servers are totally different. Servers, unlike normal workstations are in use 24/7. When you go home for the day, their work has only just begun! Doing backups, optimising the email systems and defragmenting the hard drives so that everything is ship shape and speedy for the following day's work load.

Pulling the plug on your sever, no matter how tempting, can lead to corrupt files, corruptions or failure of your email system and worst case, a complete failure of the operating system which would require you to restore the entire system from a backup.

For the reasons above, this is also why you need to ensure that every server has a UPS (a backup battery which, in a blackout, will safely shut down the server) and at least two backup tapes/drives, so that you're most critical asset (Your data), is protected.

Treat your server with care or better still, allow Aftershock to give it the love it deserves! At the first sign of trouble please feel free to call us and we can assist to keep you up and running smoothly.
